Let’s get rumbly
This past weekend I helped Justin from ADS participate in the Rails Rumble ‘09. He needed a front end developer and I was happy to oblige. For the design portion Domo stepped up.
The site we built is designed to help connect people who have lost pets with people who have found pets.
A little snafu with the Google maps api keys broke a large portion of our site, but you live and you learn. It was fun enough to see if we could build the site in 48 hours.
Rails views v. Django templates
Although I’m a Django developer, I dabbled in Rails many moons ago (pre 1.0). Thankfully I didn’t have to write anything but Rails templates, sorry views, this time around. Working with erb really made me appreciate Django templates even more than I already did. I like not writing Python in my HTML. It feels right to me. Template inheritance is awesome too, I missed that a lot.
Git v. Bzr
All of the code for the Rumble had to live on Github. I’ve only ever used Git for grabbing other people’s code, never to collaborate with other developers. Overall it was pretty painless, there were a couple of things that bugged me though. I wasn’t a big fan of how you handle conflicts, and not being able to commit empty directories seems silly to me.
We use bzr here, and I’m quite happy with it. Much like Python and Django it just makes sense to me, and that’s the most important thing. You can argue the merits of one tool vs. another all day long, and plenty of people do, but unless it makes sense to you then it doesn’t matter.

I don’t know if we’ll win, probably not with broken maps, but it was a fun experience nonetheless. Honestly I’m probably voting for Hurl which looks really useful.

@Zach You can most certainly suggest it, but I said I don’t like writing Python in my HTML. I like the separation that Django has in place.
